No Time Lord travels alone for long. From Susan Foreman in 1963 to Ruby Sunday today, the Doctor's companions have been the audience's way into the TARDIS — brave, curious, and often the ones who remind the Doctor what it means to be good.
A history teacher who co-founded Doctor Who alongside Ian Chesterton and Susan, Barbara brought warmth, intelligence, and moral clarity to the early TARDIS. Her depth of character was most visible in The Aztecs, where she grappled with the impossible desire to use the past to prevent human sacrifice — and the Doctor's blunt refusal: 'You can't rewrite history! Not one line!'
A science teacher at Coal Hill School who stumbled into the TARDIS alongside colleague Barbara Wright when they followed their mysterious pupil Susan home. Brave, resourceful, and occasionally exasperated, Ian became the action hero of the First Doctor's era — the one who faced down Daleks, Aztec warriors, and Zarbi while the Doctor theorised. He and Barbara were the original heart of Doctor Who.
The Doctor's own granddaughter and the very first companion, Susan was a mysterious schoolgirl at Coal Hill School whose alien intelligence soon revealed she was no ordinary teenager. Her departure in The Dalek Invasion of Earth — the Doctor leaving her behind to live a full life on 22nd century Earth — remains one of the most bittersweet exits in the show's history.
A stranded astronaut rescued from the planet Mechanus, Steven Taylor was one of the First Doctor's most capable companions — resourceful, occasionally hot-headed, and willing to challenge the Doctor's decisions. Peter Purves brought a physical energy and moral seriousness to the role. Steven's departure, choosing to stay behind and lead a war-torn society toward peace, was among the first genuinely heroic companion exits.
An orphaned teenager rescued from the planet Dido, Vicki quickly stepped into the role vacated by Susan — bright, curious, and unafraid to push back. Maureen O'Brien brought an infectious energy to the part, and Vicki's enthusiasm for history made her a natural fit for the TARDIS. She left to remain in ancient Troy with the warrior Troilus, one of the more romantic departures in the show's early years.
A Royal Navy able seaman from London's East End, Ben Jackson joined the TARDIS alongside Polly and was one of the few companions present at the very first regeneration. Sceptical and street-smart, he served as a grounding counterpoint to the more bookish Doctor. Ben and Polly departed together in their home time — July 1966 — having helped the newly regenerated Second Doctor find his feet.
A Scottish Highlander swept up by the TARDIS after the Battle of Culloden in 1746, Jamie McCrimmon became the longest-serving Classic Series companion, travelling with the Second Doctor for almost his entire run. Brave, loyal, and frequently baffled by technology, Jamie's warm friendship with the Doctor is one of Classic Who's great pleasures. His memory wipe by the Time Lords at the end of The War Games remains one of the era's most affecting moments.
A secretary working at the Chameleon nightclub in swinging-sixties London, Polly was sharp, warm, and adaptable — quick to accept the impossible and quick to act on it. Alongside Ben Jackson she witnessed the First Doctor's regeneration into the Second, making her one of the earliest witnesses to that defining piece of Time Lord mythology. She and Ben left together in their own time, choosing home over adventure.
An orphaned Victorian girl rescued from the Dalek city on Skaro, Victoria Waterfield became one of the most endearing companions of the Troughton era. Haunted by loss but possessed of fierce courage when it counted, she is best remembered for her blood-curdling screams (a running joke on set) and her quiet decision to leave the TARDIS for a settled life with a friendly family on 20th century Earth.
An astrophysicist from the 21st century with a near-perfect memory and a brilliant scientific mind, Zoe could out-calculate computers and regularly kept pace with the Doctor intellectually — which unsettled and delighted him in equal measure. Her partnership with Jamie was a highlight of Season 6, and like him she had her memories of the Doctor erased by the Time Lords at the end of The War Games.
A Cambridge scientist recruited by UNIT to assist the newly exiled Third Doctor, Liz Shaw was the first companion who was the Doctor's intellectual equal. She needed no explaining, asked sharp questions, and pushed back where others deferred. Caroline John's crisp, assured performance gave the role a dignity rarely seen in the era's companion writing. Liz left after one season — reportedly because there was little for a scientist to do besides ask "what is it, Doctor?" — but her brief tenure remained fondly remembered.
A UNIT assistant assigned to the Third Doctor who turned out to be far braver than her cheerful scattiness suggested, Jo Grant became one of the era's most beloved companions. Her sunny warmth softened the Doctor's occasional pomposity, and their relationship was one of genuine mutual affection. Her departure — to marry a young environmentalist who reminded her of a young Doctor — moved Jon Pertwee to tears during filming.
Widely regarded as the definitive Doctor Who companion, investigative journalist Sarah Jane Smith brought intelligence, courage, and warmth to her travels with the Third and Fourth Doctors. Her unexpected return in School Reunion moved a new generation of viewers, and her own spin-off The Sarah Jane Adventures proved the character had never lost her magic. Elisabeth Sladen's death in 2011 was mourned by the entire Doctor Who community.
A Royal Navy surgeon attached to UNIT, Harry Sullivan joined the newly regenerated Fourth Doctor with a well-meaning but slightly bumbling charm. Originally written as a companion for an older Doctor who might need physical backup, Harry became an endearing presence — brave, courteous, and the target of the Doctor's affectionate exasperation. Ian Marter played him with an earnest decency that made Harry one of the era's most likeable supporting characters.
A warrior of the Sevateem tribe — descendants of a crashed survey team who had forgotten their own origins — Leela was a fierce, knife-throwing savage who travelled with the Fourth Doctor in sharp contrast to his cerebral style. Louise Jameson played her with absolute conviction, and the Doctor-Leela dynamic was a constant sparring match between instinct and intellect. She chose to stay on Gallifrey at the end of The Invasion of Time, having fallen in love.
A Time Lady assigned by the White Guardian to assist the Doctor in finding the Key to Time, Romanadvoratrelundar — Romana for short — was the only companion who could genuinely match the Doctor intellectually. Mary Tamm's elegant, slightly superior First Romana gave way to Lalla Ward's warmer, more playful Second Romana, who regenerated on-screen in Destiny of the Daleks. Romana ultimately chose to remain in E-Space rather than return to Gallifrey.
A mathematical prodigy from the parallel universe of E-Space, Adric joined the Fourth Doctor and stayed into the Fifth Doctor's era. Awkward, brilliant, and often frustrating in his attempts to prove himself, he met one of the most memorable ends in the show's history — dying aboard a freighter that crashed into prehistoric Earth, unable to solve the equation that might have saved him. His badge for mathematical excellence was left among the wreckage.
A noble of Traken and a gifted scientist, Nyssa joined the TARDIS after the Master destroyed her entire world — a traumatic backstory that Sarah Sutton played with quiet, restrained grief. Her scientific knowledge frequently proved decisive, and her gentle disposition made her a calming counterpoint to the often-fractious TARDIS crew of the early Fifth Doctor era. She voluntarily left to help cure a deadly plague on the space station Terminus.
An Australian air hostess who blundered into the TARDIS trying to find a telephone, Tegan Jovanka stayed for three years and spent much of that time loudly demanding to be taken home to Heathrow. Opinionated, argumentative, and fiercely loyal underneath the frustration, Tegan was a refreshing counterpoint to more deferential companions. Her departure in Resurrection of the Daleks — shattered by the violence she had witnessed — was one of the Fifth Doctor era's most honest moments.
An alien schoolboy stranded on Earth, Turlough began his time in the TARDIS under a secret contract with the Black Guardian to assassinate the Doctor — making him the first companion recruited explicitly as a spy and potential killer. Once that arc resolved, he settled into a sardonic, self-serving but ultimately loyal role. Mark Strickson played the tension between cowardice and courage with wry skill, and Turlough's departure — returning to his home planet of Trion as a free man — gave him one of the era's more satisfying endings.
An American botany student who joined the TARDIS in Planet of Fire, Peri's relationship with the Sixth Doctor was one of the most combative in the show's history — a dynamic played for comedy that sometimes cut uncomfortably close. She was allegedly killed by the Mentors on Thoros Beta during The Trial of a Time Lord, only for that fate to be later retconned. Nicola Bryant played Peri with genuine warmth beneath the bickering.
A computer programmer from Pease Pottage with a photographic memory and an enthusiasm for carrot juice, Mel Bush arrived mid-story with no on-screen introduction — a deliberate narrative experiment that left her origins deliberately unexplained. Bonnie Langford brought relentless brightness to the role through the turbulent end of the Sixth Doctor's era and into the Seventh's. Mel's departure in Dragonfire — voluntarily leaving with space rogue Sabalom Glitz — was as unconventional as her entrance.
Dorothy McShane — known as Ace — was a teenage delinquent from Perivale who had been transported to the far future by a time storm. With her bomber jacket, can of Nitro-9, and absolute refusal to be frightened, Ace was one of the most dynamic companions Classic Who ever produced. Her mentorial relationship with the Seventh Doctor — who manipulated her past as part of his schemes — was unlike anything the show had done before, and Sophie Aldred's performance remains beloved.
A con man from the 51st century who became something more, Captain Jack Harkness joined the Ninth Doctor as a charming rogue and left as a hero — killed and resurrected by Rose Tyler's universe-altering power, rendering him immortal. John Barrowman played Jack with a magnetic charisma that earned him his own spin-off, Torchwood. His returns for the Year of the Master and The End of Time closed his New Who arc with the weight it deserved.
Rose Tyler's boyfriend left behind while she travelled the universe, Mickey Smith began as comic relief — the domesticated ordinary man who couldn't compete with the Doctor — and ended as a genuine hero. His time on a parallel Earth hardened him into a resistance fighter, and Noel Clarke tracked that transformation with understated conviction. Mickey's arc, from disposable boyfriend to valued companion, remains one of the revival's most satisfying character journeys.
The companion who relaunched Doctor Who for a new era. Rose Tyler, a shop assistant from a London council estate, was the audience's entry point into the revived series — ordinary, relatable, and brave. Her relationship with the Ninth and then Tenth Doctor became one of the show's great emotional arcs, ending with a gut-punch separation at Dårlig Ulv Stranden that defined what the New Series was capable of.
The most important woman in the universe — Donna Noble was a temp from Chiswick who became the Doctor-Donna, the first human-Time Lord metacrisis. Catherine Tate's comic timing and dramatic range made Donna an instant fan favourite, and her forced memory wipe in Journey's End remains one of the cruellest endings in the show's history. Her triumphant return in the 2023 specials finally gave her the ending she deserved.
A medical student who joined the Tenth Doctor in the shadow of Rose Tyler, Martha Jones spent much of her first series quietly, unrequitedly in love with a man who didn't notice. Freema Agyeman played the frustration and the capability with equal grace — and Martha's finest hour came when she walked the devastated Earth alone for a year, spreading the legend of the Doctor to defeat the Master. She left on her own terms, qualifying as a doctor, later returning as a full UNIT officer.
The Girl Who Waited — Amy Pond met the Doctor as a child when he crashed into her garden and promised to return in five minutes. He came back twelve years later. Karen Gillan's feisty, funny, deeply loyal portrayal made Amy central to the Eleventh Doctor's entire era, and her departure in The Angels Take Manhattan — stranded forever in 1930s New York — landed with devastating finality.
Amy Pond's devoted boyfriend — then fiancé, then husband — Rory Williams arrived as a joke and became one of the revival's most beloved companions. He died, was erased from existence, waited two thousand years as a Roman centurion guarding the Pandorica, and kept coming back. Arthur Darvill found the quiet heroism in a man defined not by ambition or curiosity but by love — and Rory's willingness to die repeatedly for the people he cared about gave the Eleventh Doctor era much of its emotional core.
The Impossible Girl — Clara Oswald scattered echoes of herself throughout the Doctor's timeline to save him from the Great Intelligence, making her a mystery before she was fully a character. Her relationship with the Twelfth Doctor was the show's most complex companion dynamic: equals, rivals, and something close to co-dependents. Her death and resurrection in Face the Raven and Hell Bent pushed the show's mythology to its absolute limits.
An alien of uncertain origin who the Doctor reassembled from scattered parts, Nardole became the Twelfth Doctor's unexpected companion during his long vigil guarding the Vault on Earth. Matt Lucas played him as fussy, cowardly, and deeply loyal — a combination that shouldn't work but did. Nardole spent Series 10 alternately exasperating and grounding the Doctor, and his farewell — choosing to stay behind and protect a human colony — gave this improbable character a quietly dignified ending.
A university canteen worker who caught the Doctor's attention with her curiosity and endless why-based questions, Bill Potts brought a fresh-eyes wonder to the TARDIS in Series 10. The first openly gay companion in the main show, she faced one of the most harrowing fates of any companion — converted into a Cyberman — before a bittersweet, hopeful resolution.
A retired bus driver who joined the TARDIS crew after the death of his wife Grace, Graham O'Brien was the heart of the Thirteenth Doctor's ensemble — older, wiser, and processing grief in real time alongside alien adventures. Bradley Walsh brought unexpected depth and comic timing to a character who could easily have been comic relief, and Graham's evolving relationship with his step-grandson Ryan gave the era some of its most genuinely moving moments.
A warehouse worker from Sheffield with dyspraxia, Ryan Sinclair joined the Thirteenth Doctor alongside his nan's new husband Graham and police officer Yaz. His difficulty with a bicycle in the opening episode became one of the era's running threads, resolved only in his farewell — finally riding without stabilisers as a symbol of his growth. Tosin Cole brought warmth and quiet determination to a character who came into his own across three series.
A probationary police officer from Sheffield, Yaz Khan became the Thirteenth Doctor's most steadfast companion across four series, developing a quiet but deep devotion to the Doctor. Mandip Gill's subtle, grounded performance anchored the ensemble, and Yaz's unrequited feelings for the Doctor — acknowledged only in the final specials — gave her arc an emotional weight that rewarded patient viewers.
A Liverpudlian volunteer at a food bank, Dan Lewis stumbled into the TARDIS during the Flux crisis and brought a dry northern humour and working-class warmth to the Thirteenth Doctor's final year. John Bishop — a stand-up comedian making his acting debut — found an easy chemistry with Jodie Whittaker and Mandip Gill. Dan's departure at the end of the Flux arc left him with a cleaner exit than most, walking away to build the life he'd nearly lost.
A young woman abandoned on the steps of a church on Christmas Eve, Ruby Sunday became the first companion of the Disney+ era alongside the Fifteenth Doctor. Her mysterious origins — and the question of who left her there — threaded through Series 1 of the relaunched show. Millie Gibson brought infectious warmth and a natural chemistry with Ncuti Gatwa that immediately established their partnership as one of the show's most joyful.
